ORIENTEERING
Orienteering is great fun, and the Lake District is a great place for it. A wide range of permanent courses are set up in the forests of Grizedale and Whinlatter, and Lakes Challenge have their own courses set up in other parts of the Lake District.
Orienteering sessions are usually half or full day, and consist of a training session, and a competition. In the training session we will show you the basics of map reading - the symbols, how to work out distances etc, and we'll also show you how to use a compass to work out directions. These skills are not only essential for the orienteering course, they are also useful life skills which you can take away after the course. The competition consists of tackling a course in pairs - the winning team is the one who collects all the markers in the shortest time.
BIATHLON
If you want to try something a little different, you can try a Biathlon - work your way around an orienteering course, with the additional challenge of target shooting using high-powered air rifles or archery equipment - or both. Now that is a lot of fun!
