| What fun it is messing about in the water......!
The Lake District has many ravines which
have been formed by streams rushing off the
steep fellsides. They are very beautiful, peaceful
and relaxing places to visit, but can also be
great fun to ascend. Some of them were very popular in Victorian times as tourist attractions. | | You might have to climb a waterfall, traverse around a pool, scramble up or wade in the water. You will often have to help other people in your group - physically as well as providing encouragement, and your instructor will be on hand to offer a safety rope on any difficult sections. |  |  | The gorge scrambles always have different possibilities for routes once you are in them. It's a bit like a rally with special stages - everyone does the easier sections between the special stages, and then, where there is an obstacle such as a waterfall, you will be offered different options, providing varied levels of difficulty. You are free to choose which option suits you and the group. | One of the great attractions of gorge scrambling is that way that it involves everyone in helping and providing mutual support, so providing an excellent team activity.
The steep sides of the gorges are often very important wildlife areas, holding some of the rare plants which the voracious sheep cannot get access to. We always take great care in these gorges to minimise our impact on a potentially fragile environment. |  |
